Impish Movie Review

I have decided to start doing movie reviews once or twice a week. I am a Netflix member so I am constantly watching movies. I watch everything from Mainstream to Indie and so have an eclectic taste in movies. I was thinking...why not share so others can see some of the wonders in the film industry. So here we go with the first Impish Movie Review:

Pan's Labyrinth

In this fairy tale for adults, 10-year-old Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) stumbles on a decaying labyrinth guarded by Pan (Doug Jones), an ancient satyr who claims to know her destiny. With a new home, a new stepfather (Sergi Lopez) -- a Fascist officer in the pro-Franco army -- and a new sibling on the way, nothing is familiar to Ofelia in this multiple Oscar-winning tale set in 1944 Spain from director Guillermo del Toro.

Warning this is not a children's movie!

Pros:
Pan's Labyrinth will capture your attention and imagination with a mellow, riveting story that weaves in and out of fantasy and reality in a way that the seams cannot be seen. Ivana Baquero plays a soulful Ofelia that captures your heart from the beginning of the story in her solemn demeanor. Sergi Lopez plays an interesting but cruel character of the Captain.
The acting is all strong with no obvious weak characters. There is, of course, side characters that are merely that...supporting roles, but they add to the flavor of the movie. The setting and scenes lend to the fantasy side of the movie while being perfect reality in their makeup. Graphics were fabulous and most believable. Even the soundtrack was excellently chosen to compliment the tale being told.


Cons:
If you do not like subtitles you will have a problem with this movie unless you are fluent in Spanish. The movie is completely in Spanish but will English subtitles. Do not let this stop you though, the movie is capturing enough to make you forget you are having to read.

Violence. There are a few scenes that are eye-closing and shuddering inducing in the violence department. In one scene the Captan obliverates a man's nose and you see it all. There are not too many violent scenes but they iare scattered throughout the movie and they are usually graphic.

There is one potentially scary creature that is goblin like that has eyes in his hands and such, if you do not like scary creatures you would want to avoid this movie or that scene.

All in all though I enjoyed it greatly and it has even been deemed "Potentially Worthy of Gracing the Imp's DVD shelf" which takes alot. So if you choose to see it, drop me a comment and let me know what you thought, good or bad :)
